Abstract:
Following the redundancy and closure in the early 1970s of St Peter's Church, Barton-on-Humber, one of three churches in eastern England possessing a 10th century tower with late Saxon stripwork, a programme of archaeological investigation was undertaken prior to its restoration. This article summarises the findings, which included Anglo-Saxon and early medieval floors in an excellent state of preservation, and features associated with a cemetery predating the Saxon church. The medieval church as it is seen now developed between the 13th and 15th centuries. In addition to structural evidence, 625 burials were excavated within the church. LD
