Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A seventh season of excavations is to be undertaken by archaeologists from the University of St Andrews and amateur divers from the City of Derry Sub-Aqua Club, on the wreck of one of the Spanish Armada's largest ships. The site of La Trinidad Valencia was found in 1971 in Kinnagoe Bay off north Donegal, the vessel having broken up on a shallow reef in 1588. This article describes the investigation process, which has much in common with excavation on land. Although no coherent remains of the ship have survived, isolated timbers have allowed much to be deduced about her construction, and finds have included a great mass of military gear and a number of Italian and Spanish guns, as well as a great deal of domestic material.
