Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This article describes the results of a rescue excavation at the site of West Whelpington, a deserted village occupied from the 12th century to about 1720. The site was being destroyed by a slow-moving quarry, with archaeological work in progress since 1958. On the surface the plan of the village appeared simple; however, excavation revealed that the earthworks were at best only a guide to the sites of some buildings and gave no reliable information about size, shape, functions or associations. The work also resulted in the discovery of additional medieval buildings, evidence of timber buildings, and the remains of an Iron Age farm. LD | ||||||
