Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Presents the results of metallurgical analysis directed at a particular artefact type and using an x-ray fluorescence spectrometric technique. The results are considered in the light of a new study of the chronology and formal development of the square-headed brooch. The majority of brooches were found to be cast in copper alloy (termed `bronze', although containing proportions of lead and zinc in addition to tin). Silver was present only as a trace in most cases. Brooches likely to have been made from the same melt are identified. When the compositions of brooches linked on typological grounds are compared, it is found that they are not necessarily similar. The potential of further research into links between Anglian and Scandinavian material is discussed. | |||||||
