Abstract:
Catherine Johns</xb> (161--5) describes `An enamelled bronze "pyxis" from a Roman grave at Elsenham, Essex', which has millefiori decoration and dates to the late second century AD. Ralph Jackson (165--9) discusses `The function and manufacture of Romano-British cosmetic grinders: two important new finds from London'; numerous examples of these small crescent-shaped copper-alloy objects have been identified in recent years. John Goodall (170--5) examines the arms depicted on a group of `Medieval tiles from Caen' that were presented to the Society of Antiquaries in 1788. `Francis Grose and Dudley Snelgrove' by John Blatchly (178--80) is an obituary of Snelgrove, a Fellow of the Society, discussing his collection of eighteenth-century drawings by Grose. Donald M Bailey (180--3) describes `A late Roman hunting knife' of iron and brass. Andrew J Lawson (183--5) reports on `A late Neolithic chalk plaque from Butterfield Down, Wiltshire': the plaque was found during rapid recording of extensive (mostly RB) features and is dated by comparison with similar objects recovered from King Barrow Ridge, Amesbury. Rosalind Niblett (185--8) discusses the possible function of `A bronze finger from Verulamium': the object, found in 1955 in association with an inscription dating the basilica, may have been a clamp holding the inscription in place.
