Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
There are ten relevant reports. Leslie Cram (223--6) discusses `A thirteenth-century sculptured stone head found in the precinct wall of Reading Abbey': the mitred head is only the second fragment of a human figure to be recovered from the abbey. John A Goodall (227--9) describes `Two medieval brooches' of a type that would have been worn by ordinary people. These are both ring brooches -- one of bronze, the other of lead alloy. Graeme Lawson & Angela Wardle (229--30) report on `A Roman pipe from London' identified as a musical instrument (tibiae) comprising a pair of bone and copper alloy tubes. There follows an unattributed report on `Three seal matrices' (230--2): a copper alloy counter, a lead seal matrix of William Taledot, and a copper alloy seal matrix found in Carmarthen but referring to the Borough of Grampound (Cornwall). Doris Jones-Barker (232--6) discusses the significance of a `Graffito drawing of a medieval trumpet, Hengrave Church, Suffolk'. The subject of the drawing is a zigzag type trumpet that represented an important development in trumpet construction. Catherine Johns & Martin Henig (236--9) describe `A statuette of a herm of Priapus from Pakenham, Suffolk': the Roman bronze represents a phallic deity and is a rarity north of the Alps. John Goodall & Thomas Woodcock (239--47) reassess `Armorial and other pendants, studs and ornaments' of the medieval period, in the light of recent metal-detector finds. Aspects of the arms and armour depicted on Roman coinage c~AD~290 are considered by George C Boon (247--50) in `Martiobarbuli coins': the depiction of these darts (also called plumbatae) is of particular interest. A copper seal matrix recovered from an excavation is reported on by John Clark (250--2) in `A seal of the Grey Friars found in London'; a document dated 1536 and bearing a seal impression made by that very artefact has been identified. Lastly, John Blair (252--8) describes `A Romanesque timber beakhead from Cameley, Somerset'. | ||||||||||||||||||
