Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Preliminary study of a group of perspective reconstruction drawings of the exterior of the cathedral leads to a reappraisal of its original design and progress towards completion. The west towers may be earlier than generally accepted, predating the Galilee Chapel. It is suggested that the paired eastern towers show Rhenish, rather than Norman, links, and it is shown that English churches with eastern towers are not especially rare. The cathedral is thought to have been built as a an architectural showpiece to demonstrate the high status of the bishop. | |||
