Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Documents a small room (now destroyed) located over the north portal of the Cathedral. A late-sixteenth-century account suggests that the room functioned as a watching-room for fugitives fleeing to seek sanctuary. Identifies similar rooms among cathedrals and abbeys dating from between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries AD. A lack of conclusive evidence for the function of these rooms leads to the suggestion that they probably served a different, possibly liturgical, role. | ||||
