Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The paper looks at the differing approaches to ruins shown by the eighteenth-century Romantic movement and by state-funded, twentieth-century archaeologists. The author considers the differing philosophies, the one allowing a state of decay and incorporation with the surrounding environment and the other emphasising preservation and the removal of intrusive vegetation. The history of state involvement in monument preservation, the impact of technology (with specific examples) and the role of public access are discussed. |
