Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Further slight traces of the period AD 43-75 were uncovered, but the site of the new museum, carpark and ancillary buildings proved largely barren of occupation. The palace of c AD 75 is now known to have a S wing, lying mainly under houses and the main road (A27), and probably consisting of a range of finely-decorated rooms along a S-facing colonnade. From here to the Roman shoreline the ground had been artificially terraced. Further clearance of the garden in the Great Court revealed more details of its planting scheme and water-supply. The E wing entrance hall was flanked by continuous ranges of small rooms; on the garden side lay a pool. There is a possible kitchen garden in the angle of the N and W wings. Conservation of surviving walls and floors continued in preparation for the opening of the site to the public in June 1968. | |||||
