Abstract:
One of two current Research Projects of the Society of Antiquaries is concerned with deciphering the organisation of the landscape from earliest times to the recent past. The aim is to record and analyse land-use at all periods so as to allow evaluation of the size and disposition of the population and its economic-social organisation. Priorities for excavation can then be more usefully allotted. The Wessex chalklands have been chosen for the first investigation since they are rich in visible remains; three separate sub-projects have already begun, and local participation is sought.
