Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Pre-Roman, Saxon and medieval levels were examined in 1966. In Oram's Arbour, the primary ditch probably relates to the defence of a Belgic oppidum; a medieval ditch partly following the same line defines the 12th cent W suburb. In Lower Brook Street, open area excavation was continued into 14th cent levels, the evidence from which correlates very satisfactorily with the documentary information. Many of the inhabitants were concerned with the cloth trade, either as merchants or artisans. On the Cathedral site, the plan of the 10th cent Minster with its great courtyard is complete, and the 7th cent church has been located. A late 9th cent wall-painting from the New Minster appears to be an early example of the Winchester school. At Wolvesley Palace the great first floor hall forms a core to the original 12th cent building, and a tentative plan of the whole palace can be presented. Maps indicate the extent of Winchester's Late Saxon and Norman occupation respectively. Excavation continues. | ||||||||||||||
