Abstract:
SJ 568901. An inscribed tombstone ploughed up just inside the Roman defences at Wroxeter (Viroconium) appears to have been set up in the second half of the 5th cent. The inscription, roughly pecked in a partly-Latinised Primitive Irish, reads CUNORIX MACUS MAQUICOLINE. The stone had been used twice before, once probably as a large tombstone, then cut up for building material, and eventually inverted and re-inscribed. On historical, epigraphic and linguistic grounds a date of c AD 460-75 is suggested. Evidence of Irish settlers as far east as Wroxeter is rare; and the translation of the ogam type of formula required by the dead man's heirs into the Latin used by the Wroxeter engraver has introduced some oddities into the inscription. For Wroxeter (see also 69/520).
