SU 743735. Two skeletons recently disco\\lered by a quarry-worker at Sonning were found with a sword inlaid with pattern-welded strips, a pin probably of ring-headed type and possibly worn at the hip, a small knife and six arrowheads. The burial is dated to late 9th to 10th century and is considered in connection with other Viking burials known from the south of England at Walthamstow (Essex), Reading (Berks), Santon Downham (Norfolk) and Saffron Walden (Essex). Objects from the last two sites named are also illustrated and described, and the rapid acceptance of Christianity by the Viking settlers is noted. | ||||||||||||||
