Abstract:
[SU 42]. At Lankhills sixty-eight 4th century graves were excavated and the total of 219 classified approximately chronologically. At Lower Brook Street early 5th century N Germanic pottery suggests the presence of mercenary or federate elements. St Mary's Church appears to have originated in 10th century by the addition of an apse to an earlier ?domestic building. Houses IX and XII showed several phases of 12th century timber construction, but Houses X and XI by the church seem to have been open plots then. The later phases of St Pancras' Church were examined and the 12th century plan uncovered. On Cathedral Green, the S range of the ?claustral buildings of New Minster from c 1066-1110 was investigated. Earlier stages may represent the infirmary of the Anglo-Saxon monastery. At Wolvesey Palace the E hall of c 1130 was stripped and later phases worked out in detail. A reredorter block added to the W hall c 1135 was cleared of many later phases of reconstruction. In the central courtyard was a 12th century well-house. Au(abr)
