Sixteen sites, mostly along the waterfront and the Roman and medieval defences, have been or are being excavated by the new Department of Urban Archaeology of thc City of London. Most of the formal excavations have ben conducted on the vital waterfront sites and on the Roman and medieval defences of the City.
