Abstract:
Two samian sherds which cannot be dated much after AD 40 increase the probability that Stanwick was first occupied before Cartimandua and Venutius fell out; and since these sherds belong to Stanwick II, the Tofts earthwork (Phase I) should be still earlier. In addition three sherds of Pompeian Red Ware (also from the Tofts) should indicate the army's presence, probably under Cerealis.
