Abstract:		 A review of the account of the discovery of the Ribchester hoard in 1796 leads to the conclusion that the figure forming a crest was a sphinx but that it was unlikely to have been attached to the helmet in the hoard. It is argued that the hoard is therefore likely to have been composed of material for reuse.\r\n
