As part of the Caithness Archaeological Project, the Iron Age roundhouse (or broch) of Everley was re-investigated to assess the methods employed during the site's original excavation conducted between 1890 and 1904 by Sir Francis Tress Barry. The excavation showed that Barry had stopped at an arbitrary level -- an Iron Age floor -- he did not reach the primary levels. Two hearths remained, one with in situ whale vertebrae, and finds included Iron Age pottery, stone and metal objects. At the western end of the site a trench uncovered a post-medieval two-roomed rectilinear structure. | |||||||||||||||
