Abstract:
A monumental bronze fragment from Volubilis (Roman Mauretania) recently published by C Boube-Piccot depicts a military trophy and two captives who are identifiable as a Parthian and a Briton respectively. The fragment probably comes from Caracalla's triumphal arch set up shortly before AD 217 with a dedication giving his titles as Parthicus Maximus and Britannicus Maximus. The scene is executed in a polychrome damascene technique. It shows one prisoner with distinctive trousers which identify him as a Parthian of c 2nd cent AD; the check (or tartan) pattern on the other's trousers must indicate a Celtic origin. At such a date one may assume that a Caledonian or Maeatian was intended.
