Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Two medium-sized long barrows, 1¾ miles apart and within 2½ miles of the W Kennet-Avebury-Windmill Hill monuments, were constructed by similar methods to similar designs but contained neither burials nor evidence that they had been prepared for reception of the dead. They were built from the first as solid structures, convex in plan at the E ends. Material quarried from the side-ditches had been placed within a framework of hurdles consisting of an axial line dividing the mound into longitudinal halves and pairs of offset lines subdividing each half into a series of bays. Partial analogies to these enigmatic monuments are found in the non-megalithic series of long barrows, and also in some of the megalithic long barrows of the Severn-Cotswold group. A detail is thus added to the argument that the two groups were closely related. Au(adp) | ||||||
