NO 627673. The barrow was identified in 1969 when about to be destroyed by quarrying. Excavation revealed a turf-and-soil mound revetted by dry walling and provided with a shallow crescentic façade. Set obliquely within the mound was a complex mortuary house, beginning as a timber structure with three large post-pits. This had decayed and been replaced by a light timber structure set in a boulder-built enclosure which opened on to the lateral revetment. The timber structure was burnt in 4th millennium BC (uncorrected) and covered by the building of the mound. A plano-convex knife and cupmarked stone lay in primary contexts; only one sherd was found apart from those with secondary burials. The stripping of 1½ acres of turf in a newly cleared grassland is remarked. See also plan in Curr Archaeol, 3, 1972, 295-7, and pedological account in J Soil Sci, 24, 1973, 125-8. | |||||||||||||
