Instrumental survey during very low tides is allowing the production of detailed plans of several key areas in the Isles of Scilly. These represent surviving fragments of successive ancient landscapes - field systems, walls, enclosures, and cairns - whose positions relative to sealevel can be plotted on a time scale between 1800 BC and AD 1979. It is shown that the original large island the Insula Sillina was drowned to reach its present archipelagic condition not in prehistoric or even Roman times but between the 7th and 13th centuries AD. The virtues of Scilly as a closed field laboratory for inter-disciplinary studies are re-emphasized. | |||||||||
