Abstract:
Notes the discovery in the basement of the Natural History Museum of the `barber-surgeon's' skeleton, which was unearthed at Avebury in 1938 and presumed to have been destroyed in the 1941 bombing of the Royal College of Surgeons; excavations at the monastery of Portmahomack in Easter Ross, which have yielded dating evidence in the form of a Frisian coin of the eighth century which supports documentary evidence for the foundation of the community by Nechtan, king of the Picts in 710; and the largest first-century gold-coin hoard yet found in Britain -- at a spring site close to a barrow in Bedfordshire. `In brief' notes the appointment of George Lambrick as the new Director of the CBA, and the reinstatement of Anglo-Saxon history in the A-Level syllabus.
