Abstract:
Considers new evidence that re-dates the site to 8700BC from Grahame Clark's original date of 7500BC and that occupation spanned a period of 250 to 300 years. Discusses the examination of charcoal deposits which indicates that the reeds at the edge of the ancient lake were repeatedly burned, possibly to encourage new growth for grazing, and the discovery of worked timbers from what is possibly the earliest wooden trackway recorded in Europe. Also notes that the site is only one of the major activity areas in the locality although none of the other sites have yet produced a comparable wealth of evidence.
