Abstract:		 Reports on new techniques which can be used to analyse food microfossils from dental calculus, in particular starches and phytoliths. Suggests this will be especially valuable for the study of the consumption of plant foods in pre-agricultural populations. British case studies cited include Star Carr; High Pasture Cave, Skye; St Ninian's, Shetland; Tarbat, Portmahomack; a single Roman skeleton from York; and a group of Victorian skeletons from St Barnabas' crypt, London. Note that these techniques have great potential, but much more work is needed '“ notably the establishment of a reference collection. PP-B
