Abstract:
Two core samples have been taken through the full height of the Marlborough Mount in Wiltshire. Charcoal from four locations within the mound has provided a consistent series of radiocarbon dates, revealing that the monument was constructed in the Neolithic period. It is therefore contemporary with Silbury Hill, situated 8km to the west, and is the second-largest mound known from prehistoric Britain. Knowledge and use of the site over the last nine centuries is sketched. LD
