Abstract:
Describes a feature excavated by Headland Archaeology on the south bank of the river Forth at Echline, South Queensferry, in advance of works for the Forth Replacement Crossing, comprising a substantial artificial hollow that formed the base of a house. Radiocarbon dates of around 8300 BC have been obtained from this and other structures at the site. Large quantities of Mesolithic artefacts and charred hazelnut shells were recovered, as well as fragmentary animal bone from a number of species. Along with evidence from other houses excavated in the north of Britain over the last twelve years, the site suggests the existence of a stable Mesolithic society with communities that probably covered wide areas in the search for resources, but also settled down in places they might have called home.
