Abstract:
Excavations by Pre-Construct Archaeology Central ahead of development at Needham Market, Suffolk, in 2012, revealed an Anglo-Saxon sunken-featured building in the centre of a Bronze Age funerary ring-ditch. There is evidence from central England that Anglo-Saxon people reused visible prehistoric barrows for settlement '“ several examples are cited in this article. However, the evidence at Needham Market suggests that the ditch had entirely silted up and become invisible by Anglo-Saxon times, and that there may never have been a mound over the Bronze Age burial. It is concluded that in this instance the site may simply have been an attractive location for people to live rather than having a ritual or symbolic significance. LD
