In 1879-80, most of the surviving fabric and earthworks of Northampton Castle were swept away to provide space for a new railway station. This article outlines the history of the site and the investigations that have taken place there, including some as-yet unpublished excavations in the 1960s. More recently (2013) an investigation was carried out by Northamptonshire Archaeology in advance of the construction of a new station at the western end of the castle's outer bailey, and partly over the remains of the Victorian station. Excavation revealed the remains of a 12th century building, with Anglo-Saxon features surviving beneath, and remnants of the outer bailey bank. The work demonstrated that the destruction of the castle in the 19th century was not total, but that too much has gone for the site to ever be fully understood. LD | ||||||
