Describes a major four-year community project, 'Archeox', in east Oxford. Beginning in 2010, the project has to date attracted 650 volunteers, who take part in planning and running excavations, talks and workshops, carry out research, contribute to the project website and blogs, and produce artwork. Many more people have been involved through the project's work with schools and community events. The project researched the landscape of the east Oxford area, initially compiling desk-top reports. Traces of prehistoric, Roman and medieval occupation were followed up with test pits in domestic gardens and allotments. Geophysics was conducted on open spaces and the results analysed in combination with lidar data. Excavations were also undertaken at the sites of the medieval St Bartholomew's Chapel off Cowley Road, and a medieval priory known as 'the Minchery', near Littlemore. LD | ||||||
