Abstract:
Research by James Barrett and colleagues had identified a revolution in fish consumption in England's medieval towns from approximately AD 1000. This article reports on further research which set out to investigate a number of questions regarding this so-called 'fish event horizon', first gathering a dataset representing a very substantial portion of all recorded, well-dated cod bones from London. Analysis of the data, including an investigation into isotopic ratios, revealed striking insights into medieval fish trade and the globalisation of the city's food supply. This began with a booming trade in preserved cod that appears to have developed between Norway and England in the 13th century. LD
