Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
England has recently been hosting major exhibitions from two of the world's most ambitious and powerful living artists, both of whom display surprising archaeological concerns. Anselm Kiefer from Germany has installed a large artwork in the Annenberg Courtyard in front of the Royal Academy in London, whilst a series of works by Ai Weiwei from China are exhibited at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. The impact and meaning of the work of both artists is considered in this article. Kiefer's installation is dedicated to Velimir Khlebnikov, whose idealistic world view of triumph over chance and ignorance, rooted in myth and history, is discussed here. Ai uses real antiquities and not just the symbolism of antiquity in his art. Both artists experiment with time and matter, and their work teaches that there is beauty in decay, and power in the materiality of history. Au/LD | |
