Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discusses a middle Bronze Age hoard that was found near Lewes in Sussex in 2011 and is to be exhibited at Barbican House Museum in Lewes. The circumstances and context of its recovery are outlined and its contents are summarised. Most of the estimated seventy-nine objects in the hoard are of copper alloy, although there are also two gold discs -- the first found in Britain, probably originating in France -- and necklaces from Germany that include beads of amber from the Baltic. Many of the objects are of types commonest in southern England. The hoard as a whole is an extreme illustration of how precious metals and fine objects were circulating across Europe in the Bronze Age, yet maintained a focus on localised consumption. LD | |||||
