Abstract:
Reports on the discovery of a Roman cremation burial during a metal-detecting rally near Whitchurch, Buckinghamshire, which was reported to the authorities and subsequently excavated by Oxford Archaeology. In the grave the cremated remains of an adult, placed in a pottery urn, were accompanied by a number of objects, including a copper alloy jug. The site had been crushed by farming activity, and the only well preserved part of the jug was its handle. However, this features an unusual religious scene which makes the find of national importance. Taken together, the grave goods constitute a rare collection that suggests the occupant of the grave was a woman of substance. LD
