Abstract:
The Treasure team and the Portable Antiquities Scheme -- a popular project that has recorded over a million artefacts found by members of the public since it was founded in 1997 -- are threatened with funding cuts and have been relocated within the management structure of the British Museum. The museum says the staff changes will be beneficial. Roger Bland, who was instrumental in setting up the present systems and formerly led the museum's Department of Portable Antiquities & Treasure, has resigned. This article outlines the basis on which archaeological finds are reported and recorded in England, which is partly determined by the Treasure Act 1996, and how the system came about. It then discusses the proposed changes at the British Museum in a little more detail. Au/LD
