Abstract:
This article summarises findings from eight months of large-scale excavation in advance of development at Thame, east of Oxford. Evaluation had earlier indicated the presence of many Iron Age and Roman features around a zone of springs. The excavation revealed a discrete area of early Iron Age activity which included possible round-houses and probable granaries, whilst Roman features in the western part of the site suggested that at this time the area was an agricultural processing centre. A group of Anglo-Saxon sunken-featured buildings was also revealed. After the south-west corner of the site had been excavated, natural weathering revealed additional features which have since been investigated and are considered to represent a small late Neolithic henge monument and an early Neolithic causewayed enclosure. The latter is an important addition to the group of known sites across England. LD
