Abstract:
In this interview Duncan Wilson, the first chief executive of the newly launched Historic England, outlines his career to date and discusses the role of Historic England in the context of the current political climate. Although Wilson qualified as a chartered accountant, prior to this he completed an MPhil in archaeology and was involved in numerous fieldwork projects. Archaeology has been a key theme running through many of his later roles, including as the first director of the Somerset House Trust in London, and as chief executive at the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich and later at Alexandra Palace. He believes that Historic England has a core contribution in terms of its statutory role in the process of listing and scheduling, but that its re-launch brings a very rare chance to redefine the organisation in terms of what its contribution is. One current focus is on earlier engagement with developers, giving advice that provides certainty on the archaeological implications of development and infrastructure projects. LD
