Abstract:
The stones of Stonehenge, a well-known Neolithic monument in Wiltshire, include huge sarsens originating from the Marlborough Downs about thirty kilometres to the north, and the smaller bluestones, made from several different types of rock that are all believed to have originated from the region of the Preseli hills in north Pembrokeshire, Wales. This article outlines recent research which has matched samples from bluestones precisely with a number of specific sites. Excavations at two of these -- Craig Rhos-y-felin, north of Mynydd Preseli, and Carn Goedog on the north face of Mynydd Preseli -- have revealed evidence of quarrying for monoliths in the Neolithic. Radiocarbon dates from both quarries reveal that bluestones were apparently extracted three to four hundred years before any were erected at Stonehenge. It is thought that these were first erected locally, in a monument close to the quarries, perhaps a tomb for the ancestors that was later dismantled and moved to Salisbury Plain. Excavations will continue in 2016. LD
