Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Tremough is a triangular plateau above the town of Penryn in Cornwall. Since the early 2000s the Combined Universities in Cornwall campus here has been redeveloped in a series of stages. As the campus has expanded across the plateau, investigations by the Cornwall Archaeological Unit have revealed archaeological remains that are amongst the richest in the county. The record of occupation includes Mesolithic flints, a later Iron Age enclosure and fields, a Romano-British settlement, an early 18th century house, and 19th century ornamental parkland. Remarkable Neolithic and Bronze Age discoveries have also been made, and it is these that are described in this article. In the Neolithic a ditch appeared to have separated different activity zones, including an area where flint knapping had been carried out. To the west of the ditch lay a group of pits that had been dug to hold cooled fire debris, possibly from preparing food nearby. Evidence for Bronze Age activity included the remains of five timber circles, two roundhouses, and later rectangular structures within a large enclosure. Evidence suggests that metal-working took place at the site from an early date, with later Bronze Age evidence including moulds used for casting various objects. LD | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
