Abstract:
The UK's oldest known iron-smelting furnace has been discovered at Messingham, near Manton in Lincolnshire, about four kilometres from the Tata Steel plant in Scunthorpe. Here, archaeologists have been evaluating land ahead of sand extraction over the last fifteen years. Other than post-medieval and modern drainage ditches, most of the finds have been associated with iron working, but these workings have generally proved difficult to date. However, two charcoal samples from a furnace identified at Greetwell Hall Farm in 2007--08 were radiocarbon dated to around 950 BC and 800 BC respectively, implying iron smelting in the late Bronze Age, before iron was in common circulation. Further excavation in 2014 allowed an additional radiocarbon date to be obtained and the furnace has now been placed in the earliest Iron Age, between about 800 and 600 BC. This article briefly describes the findings at Messingham, as well as other early iron-smelting sites at Broxmouth in East Lothian and Hartshill Copse in Berkshire. LD
