The Tomb of the Eagles -- the chambered tomb of Isbister, in Orkney -- was discovered in the mid-20th century and excavated in 1958 and 1976. As well as quantities of human bone, the excavators recovered 725 pieces of bird bone, the majority of which were identified as white-tailed sea eagle. Some of these were said to be in a 'foundation deposit' made at the time of the tomb's construction. However, two new radiocarbon dates have been obtained which challenge this interpretation. These reveal that the eagles died up to 1,000 years after the tomb was built, and confirm growing evidence that Orkney's Neolithic tombs remained in use for many generations. LD | ||||||||
