Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
It is generally believed that the Normans were responsible for introducing rabbits to Britain from the Continent after 1066. Although claims have been made for rabbit remains of the Romano-British period, it has been difficult to prove a burrowing animal to be as old as the feature in which its remains were found. However, two recent finds may provide evidence for rabbits in Britain at an early date. Bones excavated in 2001 at Lynford in Norfolk may date from the late Iron Age or early Roman period, and two further bones have been found in a late 3rd century context at Beddingham Roman villa, East Sussex. At both sites the bones are from smaller rabbits of southern Mediterranean type, supporting Roman attributions. LD | |||||||
