Abstract:
A review article dealing with the book Material culture and text: the art of ambiguity by Christopher Tilley which presents a post-processualist study of the rock art at Nämforsen (see also 92/69) providing three alternative presentations of the same material. The article is comprised of an overview of the book and comments from four rock art specialists. An interpretation of the work by its author in `Writing and authorship -- ambiguous arts of the self'', Christopher Tilley (110--12) is followed by `Texts about texts' by Richard Bradley (112--13) which welcomes a full-length post-processual study of archaeological material, but comments on an imbalance between the three interpretations with the `hermeneutic' account being given more weight. `A poet's ambiguity' by Mats P Malmer (113--18) points out the necessary linguistic problems involved in the study of foreign archaeology and resultant publications in translation, and takes issue with Tilley's assessment of previous work on Swedish rock art, by Hällstrom, as `sterile'. `The raw and the half-baked: structuralism and archaeological interpretation' by David S Whitley (118--21) deems the stated intention not to produce a definitive interpretation of the rock art as being primarily indicative of the author's confusion over method and meaning. The final critique, `Theory and record' by Jean Clottes (121--3), comments on a perceived half-heartedness in the structuralist analyses offered in the book and also takes issue with Tilley's assessment of Hällstrom's work. The last word goes to the original author in `Response to my critics' by Christopher Tilley (123--7) in which he assesses the previous papers and ultimately calls for intellectual debate based on a more `conversational' structure between genuinely interested parties, rather than adversarial bouts based on dominance of personality.
