Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This instalment describes the portion of hull recovered from the wreck site; so far this is the first fifth rate ship found, and its situation and construction are given detailed consideration. An unexpected feature was the abnormally strong bottom, in which 'rising deadwood' is used to lock keel, garboards and frames together, at least on the surviving section. The Dartmouth was built in 1655 on broadly similar lines to those given by Keltridge for a fifth rate of 1648, and her history confirms her excellent sailing qualities. Also noted are the use of standardized component sizes and spacing. | |||
