Abstract:
Examines the process (and time-scale) of vegetation change in and around a group of natural pools within Glasson Moss, which were used for hemp retting during the early medieval period. One of the pools, which was examined in detail, was in use from c. seventh century AD until it dried out during the late-twelfth to mid-thirteenth centuries. This disruption of the mire hydrology, possibly combined with trampling activity around the pool and ditch, appears to have instigated vegetation succession, which resulted ultimately in the colonisation of the edges of both pool and ditch by swathes of Calluna vulgaris (heather). The article suggests that the water levels in the pools were probably controlled by a series of narrow ditches with possible simple sluice systems. See also 2002/363.
