Abstract:
A report on investigations undertaken in advance of construction of a new water main close to the village. Ann Mitson (13--16) discusses `Select documentary of evidence for the parish of Aylesby' from the later Saxon period onwards: twelfth-century Templar land holdings are noted, and there is more detailed consideration of post-medieval evidence for village life. The excavations revealed occupation in the form of ditches or gullies and remains of structures dating from the Iron Age, Roman (second century AD) and medieval periods. `The pottery' of all periods is examined by Peter Didsbury & Lisa Wastling (27--30). `Other finds', reported on by Jon Watt (30--1, 32), comprise metalwork and a whetstone. Environmental evidence from soil samples is summarised in `The biological remains' by John Carrott, Brian Irving, Michael Issitt, Deborah Jaques, Harry Kenward, Frances Large, Barrie McKenna & Annie Milles (31, 32, 34). A `Trial excavation and watching brief at Little London' is reported on in appendix (36).
