Abstract:
Examines evidence for two Early Medieval tools -- the bellows and the strike-a-light. The importance of bellows is emphasised, as the Early Middle Ages depended on metal, in particular on iron, and therefore on the smelting of metals. The requisite temperature for smelting iron using wood as a fuel can only be reached by creating a forced draught using bellows. The strike-a-light -- a flat triangle of steel with terminals curved round to meet its apex -- has invited speculation about its possible use. An example from a seventh-century grave in northern Italy may display the remains of a wick, indicating its possible role in firelighting.
