Report on the archaeological investigations carried out in 1990--93, beginning with an appraisal of relevant twelfth- to early-fourteenth-century documentary evidence. A series of twelve trenches were opened mainly in the north-western and south-western wings of the castle and a sequence of occupation at the site was observed from the pre-castle ground level of the twelfth century up to the eighteenth century.
Part of an annular sod-built structure associated with the castle ground level was found with evidence of iron and bronze working and local unglazed cooking ware. Portions of a large earthen bank 2.4--3.0m high overlay the sod building. The bank and an associated fosse may have belonged to the `castle of Kilkenny' which the annals state was destroyed in 1173, or to the fortifications built or rebuilt by William Marshal in 1192.
Various architectural features of the early-thirteenth-century stone castle were found to survive, including the lower parts of three towers and two sections of curtain wall. The base batter of the curtain wall was found to extend to the bottom of the moat along the slope of the earlier earthen rampart. A sallyport through the wall was also uncovered, as were traces of a possible medieval passageway beneath the castle yard. Much medieval pottery was found in addition to various old ground surfaces, including some associated with iron smelting.
A gable wall foundation of the late-sixteenth- to early-seventeenth-century house of the tenth Earl of Ormonde (demolished in 1825) was also located along with traces of a contemporary balustrade built onto the medieval base batter. The balustrade was destroyed later in the seventeenth century, at which time the fifth Duke of Ormonde converted the castle into a French-style château. Part of the moat was also filled in at this time for laying out a rose garden. The classical gateway through the curtain wall begun by the second Duke was not finished until the early-eighteenth century. Other changes were carried out in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, including the demolition of the north-east and south-east wings and the rebuilding of the rear wall of the classical gateway. The old approach road to the castle (of which a part was uncovered) was abandoned in favour of a new one. Parts of the castle rebuilt are 1825 are not detailed. | |||||||||||||||||
