Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Compares the very different views of Roman technology expressed respectively by K D White, Ö Wikander, and J P Oleson (all 1984), and explores the concept in the light of recent archaeological research into boats, vehicles, water-lifting devices, and watermills. Impressive application of technology is found in food production and transport, and in water supply and architecture the application of appropriate and occasionally innovative technology can be seen. Although the Roman Empire was not particularly fertile ground for an 18th century type industrial revolution, it does not follow that there was no technical innovation. Au(abr) | ||
